Late June to the 4th of July is
carnival-time on St. John, but the usual activity on St. John is limin',
relaxing in island vernacular, and it is done on the beaches, at the
cafes, restaurants and bars, in the whirlpools and hammocks at the
villas, or under the shade of any flamboyant tree. In other words, just about
anywhere on St. John. |
|
Hiking and climbing the 6,000 acre national
park (2/3 of the island) is an option for the more energetic.
Trails and tours of varying lengths and levels of difficulty accommodate
everyone. There are even donkey rides on the nature trails! |
|
Snorkeling the 5,600 acres of ocean and
reefs that are also part of the national park is one of the most enjoyed
sports. Snuba diving, a mild version of scuba diving, is also
popular. And of course, scuba diving ranges from low key to high adventure.
Windsurfing has become a favorite sport on the north shore beaches. Deep-sea
fishing is also available and can be very rewarding. |
|
Exploring ruins of old sugar plantations,
or searching the many caves for mysterious petroglyphs carved in volcanic
rock by Taino Indians provides a historical perspective of St. John. |
|
Heaven is another word for the Virgin
Islands if you are a sailor. Literally thousands (most uninhabited) of
islands and cays are all within a few hours sail of each other. Boats from
catamarans to 20-foot day sailors to four-masted yachts are available for
rent, with or without crews. |
|
Island shopping, is exciting whether you're
a bargain hunter or an art connoisseur. St. John's artist community is
respected worldwide. Tax-free status provides tempting prices on jewelry,
liquors, and many other items. |
